It was an international success in its first week on sale, charting at number one in twelve countries, topping both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200, and reaching the top 5 in eleven other countries. x was the best selling album of 2014 in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
In December 2014, Spotify named x the most-streamed album of 2014. x has been certified 10× Platinum in the UK with sales of over 2.7 million copies, making it one of the best-selling albums in the history of the UK, and the sixth best-selling album of the decade in the UK. The album has been certified 3× Platinum in Canada, 6× Platinum in New Zealand, and 2x Platinum in the US. Divide
÷ (pronounced “Divide”) is the third studio album by Ed Sheeran, following in the mathematical footsteps of his + (Plus) and x (Multiply) albums. ÷was released on March 3, 2017 through Asylum Records, a division of Atlantic Records. The album’s first two singles were released in tandem on January 6, 2017. One, the electropop “Shape Of You”, and the other guitar-driven “Castle On The Hill,” which pays homage to his upbringing in the English countryside town of Framlingham, Suffolk. The tracks both broke Spotify’s first-day streaming record, with “Shape Of You” attracting 6,868,642 streams and “Castle On The Hill” garnering 6,168,395 streams in the first 24 hours after their releases. The previous record holder was One Direction’s “Drag Me Down” with 4,759,698 streams.
Upon release, ÷ became the third fastest-selling album of the SoundScan era in the UK, moving 672,000 units in its first tracking week.
